Two of the School's extra-curricular activities focusing on (and rewarding) students' analytical and communication skills--The Melvoin Student Ethics Symposium and the Fred Lang Student Competition--are again set for Spring 2008. The sixth annual Melvoin Symposium (Tuesday, April 29, 3:00pm, 8014 DePaul Center) features winners of the Fall '07 Melvoin Essay Contest Andrea Kunkel, Noor Raza and Dominick LaSpisa--competing for the Melvoin Ethics Prizes. The sixteenth annual Fred Lang Student Competition (Thursday, May 22, 3:00pm, 8005 DePaul Center) will again feature teams from the School's students groups--Accounting Club, Beta Alpha Psi, the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants-- in this annual case analysis and resolution contest. (The School's second annual Goglin Essay Contest is also in progress; see story below.)

MAHA selects 2008-09 Officers

DePaul's chapter of MAHA--The Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants--has elected its Executive Board for the 2008-09 year: President – Nadia Jaber; Vice-President of Operations – Melissa Herrera; Vice-President of Professional Development – Brenda Ramirez; Vice-President of Public Relations – Kari Rios; Treasurer – Abigail Carrillo, and Secretary – Emmanuel Garcia.

Second Annual Goglin Essay and Presentation Contest

The School will offer the second annual Edward & Mary Goglin Essay and Presentation Contest. This year's topic is especially timely: "The SEC Proposed Rule on Allowing US Companies Choice of Employing GAAP or IFRS: Pros, Cons, and Consequences of Adoption." The competition, sponsored by the Edward & Mary Goglin Fund in the School, provides up to $2000 in Goglin Prizes.

Edward and Mary Goglin were long time admirers of DePaul University, especially its accounting program, and enjoyed taking an active role in enhancing a DePaul accounting education. Although they never attended the university, they went to many Men’s basketball games coached by Ray Meyer and played in the old “Barn” on the Lincoln Park Campus. Mary Goglin never formally studied accounting; however, she did the books for the family business. Late Prof. Gary Siegel Honored by IMA Award

The Institute of Management Accountants and its Foundation for Applied Research (FAR) have announced creation of the Siegel Award for Applied Research. The award, named to honor the late Prof. Gary Siegel of DePaul, will recognize the most significant research funded by FAR, and will be presented at the IMA annual conference.

Siegel, who passed away in November 2007, was a long-time member of the faculty of the School of Accountancy, and his nationally-recognized work revolutionized both the field and acdemic discipline of management accounting. Siegel also served on the IMA's Board of Trustees for the FAR, and, in 2005, received the IMA's R. Lee Brummmet Award, among the highest honors practice confers on academe.

Accounting Club Names 2008 Officers

The Accounting Club in the School of Accountancy has announced its recently-elected officers for the 2008 calendar year. Serving this year will be President Ashley Christenson, VP-Administration Maryam Cowlas, VP-Marketing Megan Jorgenson, VP-Finance Kevin Grenning, and VP-Networking Alex Luca and Orlando Pastore.

Along with peer groups Beta Alpha Psi, MAHA and NABA, the Accounting Club provides important activities for pre-professional students, including office visits, seminars and workshops, its Firm Resume Book, as well as social and membership events.

Vincentian Mission Fellows Program Seeks Mentors

The DePaul University Office of Mission and Values offers its Vincentian Mission Fellows Program, which provides the skills, formation, and understanding for a select group of students who have reached the highest level of Vincentian mission engagement to firmly root their career and lifestyle aspirations in Vincentian values and service.

TWO students participating in the program are accounting majors. They could use mentors.

Virchow, Krause Sponsors Scholarship

DePaul friends and alumni at Virchow, Krause & Company, LLP, have provided the School with a scholarship for a superior accounting student, the Virchow, Krause Scholarship. The award, to be presented annually, joins the growing scholarship roster in the School, which now includes 21 separate scholarship and award funds. (For our 2007-08 scholarship roster, click here.)

Providing increased levels of student financial support is one of the objectives of Vision Twenty 12, DePaul's ambitious long-range plan. Accounting scholarships sponsored by firms, alumni, professional organizations and, of course, Ledger & Quill, provide approximately $200,000 in support for close to 100 top accounting majors at DePaul.

L&Q's 33rd annual luncheon another success

Ledger & Quill's thirty-third annual luncheon attracted another large crowd, recognized the many significant contributions of the many distinguished guests, and presented our latest scholarship and award students to the membership. With 2007-08 awards totalling over $200,000 for a second consecutive year, there was much to celebrate.

NABA Takes PWC xTax Local

The DePaul Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) won this year’s local PricewaterhouseCoopers xTax Case Competition, the first step towards national finals. This is the second year that NABA has won the local competition. The PricewaterhouseCoopers tax partners judging the competition commended NABA for the superior content of their presentation, recommendations, and the creativity of their approach to the issues.

The members of the NABA Case Team are freshman Melanie Jacobs, sophomore Christi Harris, juniors Melody Johnson and Eddie Doxey , and senior Fara Cage. Prof. Sandra Shelton serves as NABA moderator and team coach.

Deloitte Campaign for DePaul Starts off Year

A full house of friends and alumni celebrated the DePaul-Deloitte relationship at the Campaign for DePaul reception, kicking off the firm's 2007-08 fund raising efforts on behalf of the university.

DePaul friends and alums at Deloitte, in association with the Deloitte Foundation, sponsor the Deloitte Alumni Professorship, the Deloitte Minority Internship Fund and scholarship program, student internships, and, through Ledger & Quill memberships, scholarships and awards for top students in the School.

Prof. Ron Marcuson to sponsor Tax Professorship

Ronald D. Marcuson, long-time adjunct faculty member in DePaul's MST program and retired partner with Ernst & Young, has contributed to the university the Ronald D. Marcuson Master of Science in Taxation Professorship. The professorship will be the School's fifth such sponsored position, joining those sponsored by Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and Ledger & Quill.

"I have very positive feelings about the university and its mission in general," says Marcuson; "DePaul offers opportunities to students who might not otherwise be able to pursue an education--students, for example, who might be the first in their families to go to college." Providing the best professors and best instruction to these students is as vital as scholarship support, and the Marcuson Professor will further enhance DePaul's standing as one of the finest graduate tax programs nationwide.

Prof. Ed Cohen Receives ICPAS Lifetime Achievement Award

The School's Prof. Ed Cohen--who has distinguished himself in the classroom across many generations of Chicago accounting students--was recognized with the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Illinois CPA Society.

The award was presented at a June ICPAS recognition dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hilton, an event which drew a large attendance of family, friends, colleagues and associates, gathered over a half-century of service to DePaul and the Society.

Inaugural Goglin Essay Contest Prizes Award

School students Amanda Simon and the team of Bradley Nelson, Aun Rizvi and Alex Chudnovsky--Strobel Scholars all--competed for the Goglin Essay Prizes, the School's newest out-of-classroom exercise to enhance an accounting education. Finalists in the competition presented their essays before the School's Deloitte Alumni Professor John McEnroe, and Ernst & Young Alumni Professor Belverd E. Needles, formidable auditors for any accountant, much less accounting students.

The contest, staged by Prof. McEnroe, is sponsored by the new Edward and Mary Goglin Fund in the School, which seeks to enhance DePaul's accounting programs through annual innovative intellectual excercises. This year's essay and presentation topic was timely: "Defining and Combating Earnings Management."

The Goglin Presentations joins the School's other programs to improve analytical thinking and commuincation skills, the Fred Lang Student Case Competition and the Melvoin Student Ethics Essay Contest and Ethics Symposium.

2007 CFMA, TEI Awards presented

Scholarships were presented to top School of Accountancy students this spring by two professional organizations long active in their support of professional education: the Chicago chapters of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) and the Tax Executives Institute (TEI).

The CFMA's Gordon Marshall Awards were presented to Andrea Cohen and Zoe Soo Hoo, both juniors in the School's Strobel Scholars program and leaders in the School's student groups. The awards were announced at a CFMA luncheon June 13, hosted by chapter president Shawn Erickson (C.J. Erickson Plumbing), with former Pepper Construction CFO Gordon Marshall presenting the awards.

Marshall's distinguished career and long-term efforts to improve university and professional education in his field are recognized in the awards. Since 2002, CFMA scholarships to School students total $15,000.

The Chicago chapter of the Tax Executives Institute concluded the ninth offering of its Professor's Awards in June by naming School students Whitney Maracich and Alex Chudnovskyrecipients of the 2006-07 awards. Both students produced outstanding work in tax-related courses, and were recommended by faculty for the recognition.

The Professor's Awards program this year was coordinated by TEI's John Mann (SeviceMaster), working with past president Robert Gainer (LaSalle Bank) and new president Lorna Turner (Hyatt Corporation). Established in 1999, the TEI Profesor's Awards total $22,500.

The School and Ledger & Quill also want to recognize the award selectors in these programs, Professors Mark Sullivan and David Roberts, for their efforts in making what are quite often difficult decisions.

2007 Fred Lang Student Case Competition Results

The School's fifteenth annual Fred Lang Case Competition was won by Team MAHA--the students from the DePaul student chapter of the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants. This year's case was particularly timely, confronting the students with a complex and multi-layered case of earnings management. Teams from The Accounting Club, Beta Alpha Psi, and our chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants participated in the competition; judging was again extremely difficult.

Judges this year were Jenny Babiak (Deloitte) and Paul Nockels (McGladrey & Pullen), both from Ledger & Quill; Jim Logothetis (Ernst & Young), and Brian Ruben (Deloitte). Their task was, as usual, very difficult, and we congratulate them on a job well done.

Students Vie for 2007 Melvoin Ethics Prizes

The fifth annual Charles & Selma Melvoin Student Ethics Symposium was held Wednesday, April 18, 2007. The student participants presented their papers before an impressive panel of judges and an audience of students, faculty, firm representatives and alumni, and defended their positions in sometimes difficult cross-examination.

Strobel Scholars Natalie Garcia, Jennifer Paruch and Patrick Phillips, selected in the Fall ’06 Melvoin Essay Contest, competed for the $3000 in Melvoin Ethics Prizes. After significant deliberation, the judges awarded the top prize to Phillips.

The presentations showed both rigor and grace: Garcia’s tightly-focused analysis of agency theory demonstrated that it imposes no obligation for employee loyalty in cases of corporate wrongdoing. Paruch focused on the ethical basis of corporate citizenship and stakeholder theory, focusing on (and finding wanting) a well-known large retailer. Top prize awardee Phillips presented an overview of the historical foundations of personal (and thus business) ethics. As usual, free-wheeling and far-ranging discussion followed.

Judges this year were Gerald Ginsburg, Managing Director, RSM McGladrey and a member of the Ledger & Quill Board, and long-time accounting educator Prof. Edwin Cohen. Due to the high quality of the presentations, the judges also consulted with Prof. Elizabeth Murphy. Participating again was Prof. James Halstead, chair of DePaul’s Religious Studies Department, whose expertise was invaluable this year in that two of the presentations explored, with surprising sophistication, the philosophical basis of both individual and corporate ethics.

NABA Takes PWC Regional Case Competition

DePaul's student chapter of NABA--the National Association of Black Accountants--took first place in the regional finals of the 2006 xACT Challenge, the national student case competition sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The team was commended by the judges for their knowledge of the material, the quality of their presentation, and their ability to effectively communicate the accounting and business issues. The judges stated that the team’s presentation was excellent.

Many from PWC assisted throughout the xAct program: Karaleee Eich, Stuart Wood, and Lizett Coral. Judges from PWC were Amy Graves, Matt Booth, and Colleen Harrison.

xACT presents challenges that focus on the impact of accounting policy on the business and investing community. Teams must consider multiple stakeholder viewpoints, collect information about alternatives and select a course of action, then present their solution competitively before (and face tough Q-and-A from) a panel of judges.

Ahern to Head International Standards Center

Prof. John T. Ahern of the School will head up a new center in DePaul's College of Commerce, the Center for Global Accountancy Education, Benchmarking and Research (CGAEBR), which will work to improve financial accounting in the developing world by policing three specific areas: international auditing standards, financial reporting and accounting education.

CGAEBR will work closely with established international aid and development agencies, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Also involved in the new center is KPMG, providing sophisticated IS capabilities to the project.

“Before you can build a developing nation’s economy, you have to have a viable accounting system in place to measure whether progress is truly being made,” says Prof. Ahern. “It is a tremendous challenge. But meeting it will add immeasurably to the developing world’s ability to attract foreign capital, grow their economies and reduce poverty.”

Inaugural Peters Scholarships Announced

Strobel Scholars seniors Allison Kezerle and Kathleen Minor have been selected to receive the inaugural Robert M. Peters Scholarships. The awards are provided by the Robert M. Peters Endowment, established to honor Prof. Peters, whose leadership and dedication shaped DePaul's honors accounting program into one of the finest in the nation.

The Peters Scholarships are the School's premiere student recognition.

Kezerle Minor

Both Kezerle and Minor have excelled in the classroom, in their community and university service activities, in the School's student organizations, and professionally as interns with major firms; both have also merited many other distinguished honors, including the L&Q Student Leadership and Success Through Scholarship awards.

The Peters Fund, announced at a festive event in September 2004, was created by contributions from hundreds of Strobel Scholars alumni, supplemented by gifts from major firms and a significant match by Ledger & Quill.

MAHA Takes National Case Competition

DePaul's chapter of MAHA--the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants--distinguished the university once again by taking first place in the national finals of the student case competition sponsored by ALPFA and KPMG. ALFPA--the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Acounting--hosts the annual student case contest at its annual meeting.

Team MAHA won the KPMG-ALPFA midwest regional in April, and advanced to the national finals in August, besting such competition as Georgia State, Texas-Austin, Pace, and Southern California.

Team MAHA members included Geovannie Conception, Christina Huizar, Diana Rodriguez, Aaron Van Osdol, and Guadalupe Villagomez. Serving as coach and mentor to the championship team was Prof. Elizabeth Murphy.

As with the many past victories of Team MAHA, many volunteers stepped up to contribute time and expertise to the winning effort: from KPMG, Past L&Q President and Lifetime Associate Terry Kenney, L&Q Executive Committee member Ed Wiertel, Susan Guthrie, Aalok Virmani, Daniel Cerevantes and Kellie Miller. Also assisting in the effort was L&Q Board member Sammy Delgado (Abbott Laboratories), along with current MAHA officers Lucy Calderon and Leticia Zavala.

Of course, Ledger & Quill is prouder than ever to be a sponsor of DePaul's MAHA chapter!

Student Awards Announced

A record 27 student excellence awards for the 2006-07 year were presented to top students in the School, totaling $42,500, another record. The awards include the Professor's Award, sponsored by the Chicago chapter of the Tax Executives Institute; the Gordon Marshall Award of the Chicago chapter, Construction Financial Management Association; the new Success Through Scholarship Fund awards; and of course both the Ledger & Quill Student Merit Awards and Student Leadership Awards.

Including 2006-07 renewals of the 2005-06 Success Awards for those entering their senior year, the School's awards to currently-enrolled students exceeds $50,000. This amount does not include the School's ongoing four-year scholarship commitments. Total School/L&Q student support (awards, prizes and scholarships) is expected to near $200,000 this year--yet another record.

The TEI Professor's Award this year honors TEI staltward Janice L. Lucchesi, Director of Tax, Akzo Nobel Inc., for her distinguished career in the Chicago tax community and her service to TEI. The CFMA's Gordon Marshall Award annually recognizes former Pepper Construction CFO Marshall for his distinguished efforts on behalf of the chapter and professional education.

Since their inception, the TEI and CFMA awards programs have provided over $31,000 in support to 21 outstanding students. Both organizations are committed to a goal similar to that of DePaul and Ledger & Quill: to assist outstanding and deserving students with their college educations, and to directly participate in shaping the future of the profession.

L&Q's Big Shoulders Aid President's Club

L&Q Scholarship alumna Andrea Bossong has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the President's Club. Bossong, with Deloitte, continues her impressive service contributions to DePaul: while at DePaul she was, among other offices, BAP president, and received both L&Q Student Leadership and Success Through Scholarship awards, in addition to holding a Strobel Scholarship.

Bossong joins the already formidable L&Q presence on the Advisory Council: L&Q President David Berek (Credit Suisse), Maureen Berry (Deloitte), and Stacia Taylor from the L&Q Board.

The President's Club is the honor society of donors contributing to DePaul at the $1000 level, those whom L&Q dubs "DePaul's Finest." And L&Q members take note: at a recent President's Club reception, University President Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M., announced his intention (or challenged alumni) to double the size of the President's Club by Spring 2007.

Fourteenth Lang Competition
Goes to Accounting Club

With four excellent presentations concerning a slippery case of earnings management, this years's Fred Lang Student Competition was among the most difficult to judge, but the Accounting Club took top honors in this year's contest.

Team presenters were Andrea Cohen and Natasha Tierney, backed by the brainpower of team members Andrea Greab, Jimmy Miner, Galit Rubenshtein and Sanya Torres. As is traditional, all School groups competed, and Beta Alpha Psi and our chapters of the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants produces strong analyses and presentations.

Judges this year were H. Edward Morris, Vice President, Valuation Services, CDH Financial Group in Chicago, Visiting Instructor Margaret Tower of the School, and Michael Ritschdorff, with the Chicago office of Ernst & Young.

TEAM MAHA STRIKES AGAIN:

In April 2006 a team of students from the School’s chapter of MAHA—-The Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants—-took first place in the regional student case competition sponsored by KPMG and ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting), held in New York.

MAHA once again distinguished itself and DePaul by besting stiff competition: Baruch College, Bentley, Pace, Rutgers, St. John’s, and the University of Massachusetts.

MAHA's all-sophomore team included Geovannie Concepcion, Christina Huizar, Diana Rodriguez, Aaron Van Osdol and Guadalupe Villagomez . Helping out as coaches were the School’s Prof. Elizabeth Murphy, KPMG’s Susan Guthrie, Terry Kenney and L&Q Executive Committee member Ed Wiertel, and MAHA alums Fabiola Salcedo and L&Q Board member Sammy Delgado, both of Abbott Laboratories. The KPMG-ALPFA national finals are in Fort Worth, TX, in August. Stay tuned.

Whittington Named Commerce Dean

Ray Whittington, Ledger & Quill Director of the School of Accountancy and MIS since 1997, has been named Dean of DePaul's College of Commerce and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business. Whittington has served as interim Dean since November 2005, following former Dean Arthur Kraft.

Under Ray's leadership, Ledger & Quill has steadily increased both the number and amount of scholarships and awards to top accounting students (L&Q's 2006-07 "tuition bill" will approach $200,000), greatly increased scholarship support for continuing students, and increased the number of scholarship funds available. With the development of the Success Through Scholarship Fund, the Robert M. Peters Fund, and the Ralph Pechanio Scholarship Fund, L&Q and the School are enabled to "attract the best, educate the best, and graduate the best" accounting talent.

Fourth Melvoin Student Ethics Symposium Held

The fourth annual Charles & Selma Melvoin Student Ethics Sympoium was held at DePaul Wednesday, April 26, in the DePaul Center. Three students whose essays were judged superior in the Fall 2005 Melvoin Ethics Essay Contest presented their papers, and defended their ideas under questioning by a panel of judges.

Students selected to participate in this year's Symposium were Anna Marszalek, Tanya Tisljar, and Kathryn Wayman. All three students emphasized in their essays that the profession needs to be more pro-active and aggressive in fraud detection. Marszalek received the top Melvoin Ethics Prize for her performance at the podium.

The judges this year were Gerald Ginsburg, Managing Director, RSM McGladrey and member of the L&Q Board, L&Q member Tyson May, manager with Deloitte, and Symposium sponsor Hugo Melvoin.

DePaul Students Score on CPA Exam

According to statistics released by NASBA, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, DePaul was among the top ten schools with advanced-degree students passing all sections of the CPA exam for the first time.

DePaul was tied for tenth place nationally with Bentley College and the University of Georgia with a 14.3 pass rate. Two-tenths of a point above us was Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The 2004 exam was taken by 44,513 candidates.

Chicago CFMA chapter Marshall Awards Presented

Two DePaul students were presented the 2005-06 Gordon Marshall Awards of the Chicago chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association. Seniors Stacy Henrickson and Metin Lukovic were presented the awards at the group's February monthly dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Select in Rosemont.

The awards program, now in its third year, has made six awards totaling $9000, to assist outstanding students complete their accounting educations. The awards were presented by CFMA chapter vice president Shawn Erickson.

The awards are named in recognition of Gordon B. Marshall, prominent construction industry executive with The Pepper Companies, Barrington, IL, and an advocate for strong education for the industry. Marshall held leadership roles in both the Chicago chapter and national CFMA, the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and its Construction Education Fund, and the Institute of Certified Construction Financial Professionals.

The Construction Financial Management Association, now celebrating its 25th year, is the only non-profit organization dedicated to serving the financial professional in the construction industry. With over 6000 members in 80 chapters nationwide, CFMA is the communications leader and premiere source of education and information about those aspects of financial management unique to the construction industry.

Alums, Members Featured in Commerce Exchange

The January 2006 issue of Commerce Exchange, the friends and alumni newsletter of DePaul's College of Commerce, features quite a few School alums and L&Q members in its pages.

Appointments Announced

Babiak, Henaghan, Cangelosi Offer Talents

Three new appointments to Ledger & Quill will further L&Q's ties to major firms, as well as provide a few distinguished alums the oppotunity to help guide us in our fourth decade of service to DePaul.

Named to the Executive Committee is Deloitte's Jennifer Babiak, and to the Board BDO Seidman's Sean Henaghan and Russell Cangelosi, of Glenview-based International Trading Partners.

Cangelosi holds both the BSC and MST from DePaul, and is relatively new to working with L&Q. Henaghan has been active with School students as a recruiter at DePaul, and is a regular participant at student-group functions. Babiak is a recent grad, Strobel Scholar "veteran," past president of Beta Alpha Psi and an L&Q Scholarship alumna.

NABA Tops in Recruiting

DePaul's student chapter of NABA, the National Association of Black Accountants, was recognized as tops in the nation for Division II membership recruiting. The achievement was announced by NABA National Director of Student Member Services Wayne Lee, in the Fall issue of NABA's national magazine Achieve.

NABA led Division II schools (membership of 30-60) with an impressive 83% membership increase over last year.

NABA's membership campaign, conducted under the slogan "Each One Reach One," was helped along by the expansion of the Executive Committee to include Marketing and Promotions (Kudazi Mutasa, Chair), Membership and Retention (Andrew Williams, Chair), and Membership Recruitment (Ndidi Okapu, Chair). Congratulations to NABA president Jennifer Williams, and faculty moderator Prof. Sandra Shelton.

Fall Luncheon Packs the House

Ledger & Quill's thirty-first annual Fall Luncheon and Awards Ceremony (Thursday, November 10, 2005) attracted yet another big and enthusiastic turn-out from the DePaul and accounting communities in Chicago.

"New" was the word of the day, with new L&Q president David Berek, presiding over his first luncheon, introducing new interim College of Commerce Dean Ray Whittington, who was especially pleased to introduce new scholarship sponsor Ralph Pechanio as well as our seven new scholarship recipients for 2005-06.

David Berek to Lead L&Q

David Berek, CFO with Frye-Louis Capital Management, has been tapped to serve as the seventeenth president of Ledger & Quill. Berek's term begins this Fall, and will run through Spring of 2007.

He will be our seventeenth president, in a long line begun by inaugural president Ernie Wish in 1972, and follows his immediate predecessor Steven Cappaert in continuing to lead and advance the organization.

Berek, a DePaul accounting alum and graduate of the John Marshall Law School, is a frequent speaker at association conferences and seminars, and has authored many articles in such publications as the Illinois Bar Journal, the ABA Journal, and Family Law Quarterly.

At DePaul, in addition to the L&Q Board and Executive Committee, he has been active with the Young Alumni Association and with fundraising efforts on behalf of the DePaul Men's Soccer program (yes, he lettered as a student). Berek is also a member of the President's Club.

ICPAS Awards to School Students

Three DePaul University School of Accountancy and MIS Students were named recipients of the prestigious Illinois CPA Society Accounting Scholarships.

Katherine Dahlberg, Marian Sasry, and Porschia-Thomas Quinn were selected from students at colleges and universities throughout the state. Thomas-Quinn was recipient of the Herman J. Neal Minority Scholarship, DePaul's first such awardee.

Welcome Professor Du!

Assistant Professor Ning Du joins the faculty of the School of Accountancy and MIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her Ph.D. She received a MPA from Georgia State University. Ning’s research relates to judgment and decision making issues in accounting, with a focus on the use of accounting information to reduce uncertainty for investment decisions.

Currently, she is investigating how investors perceive risk and ambiguity. Her dissertation focused on variables affecting different information processes that mediate investors’ reactions to management voluntary disclosures. Ning was the recipient of the Fred H. Figge Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award at Illinois, 2002-2003.

2004-05 Student Awards Announced

Recipients of over $30,000 in academic excellence and service awards were named last week by the School of Accountancy and Ledger & Quill. A record 25 awards were presented in total, including those offered by the Tax Executives Institute, the Construction Financial Management Association, Ledger & Quill (the Student Leadership Awards and the new Student Merit Awards), and the Success through Scholarship Fund at DePaul.

Siegel Takes IMA Brummet Award

Gary Siegel, Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy and MIS, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Institute of Management Accountants' R. Lee Brummet Award, one of the highest recognitions practice can present an educator.

The award was presented at the IMA national conference in Boston, June 20, 2005.

Prof. Siegel was selected for the award on the basis of his grounds-breaking research into the work of management accountants, and the impact of his studies on accounting education.

Prof. Siegel has previously been awarded the James Bulloch Award from the IMA, and most recently a Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois CPA Society.

Delgado to Join L&Q Board

Strobel Scholars alum and Ledger & Quill scholarship student Samuel Delgado, Abbott Laboratories, will join the Ledger & Quill Board effective Fall, 2005.

While at DePaul, Delgado distinguished himself in many capacities, including a MAHA presidency, and assistant to Prof. Emeritus Robert M. Peters, then Strobel Scholars Director.

Delgado will serve a three-year term on the Board, and serve as DePaul, School, and Ledger & Quill "champion" at Abbott Laboratories, a long-time School and university corporate benefactor.

Lifetime Associate Goss Receives
Honorary Doctorate at June Commencement

L&Q Lifetime Associate Howard Goss was awarded an honorary doctorate from DePaul at this year's College of Commerce commencement, June 12, 2005.

Goss, former CEO and chairman of the board of Transco,Inc. and University Trustee, was recognized for five decades of distinguished service and leadership in the Chicago business community. Both Howard and wife Roberta have displayed a magnificent and unfailing generosity to the university and its students.

Howard and Roberta sponsor the Goss Scholarship Fund in the School, which currently supports five students in our Strobel Scholars program.

Beta Alpha Psi Takes Lang 2005

In another close decision, and based on their performance with the most difficult case in the competition's history, Team BAP--our Beta Gamma chapter of Beta Alpha Psi--took top honors in this year's Fred Lang Student Competition.

The annual case resolution and presentation contest, held in DePaul Center Wednesday, May 25, was the thirteenth in the series, which dates back to 1993.

Judged once again as "distinguished" were BAP team members Jon Assell, Hadas Avni, Marta Malek, Jeannie Rowells and Sarah Sanders.

As usual, all four student groups--Accounting Club, and our chapters of the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants fielded teams.

Strobel Scholar Salcedo Named Graduation Speaker

Senior Strobel Scholar Fabiola Salcedo has been named Student Speaker at the university's June 2005 College of Commerce commencement.

Among many accomplishments, Salcedo has excelled academically as an accounting honors student, served as president of our Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants (MAHA) chapter, and, along with other MAHA members, earned national recognition in case competitions held by major accounting firms and organizations.

2005 Melvoin Ethics Symposium Held

The School held the third annual Charles & Selma Melvoin Student Ethics Symposium on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 in DePaul's Conference Center. Accounting students Katherine Dahlberg, Lu Ling Li, and the team of Jennifer Smith and Porschia Thomas-Quinn presented summaries of their award-winning essay from the Fall '04 Melvoin Essay Contest, and fielded questions from the panel of judges and audience of students and faculty.

DePaul Ranks High in Latest
MBA, CMA/CFM Surveys

DePaul's business and accounting education prowess was recognized in two recent surveys: the part-time MBA program of the Kellstadt GSB was rated eighth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and a survey by Strategic Finance shows DePaul among the pass-rate leaders in the 2002 CMA and CFM examinations.

As announced by Commerce Dean Arthur Kraft, U.S. News & World Report 's 2006 edition of America's Best Graduate Schools ranks our part-time MBA program as eighth best nationally--and has put the Kellstadt program in the Top Ten for the eleventh consecutive year.

"The program's consistent top ten ranking acknowledges the school's steadfast focus on offering a well-respected, flexible, practical program of business study tailored for working professionals," added Dean Kraft.

And according to a recent survey by Strategic Finance, a publication of the Institute of Management Accountants, DePaul graduates ranked, for 2002, third on one-time sitting pass rates on the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam, and eighth on the Certified Financial Manager (CFM) exam.

The survey, which updated a broader previous effort published in 2001, included 263 colleges and universities (globally) whose graduates are candidates for either the CMA or CFM certification from the Institute of Management Accountants.

Murphy Awarded 2005 ICPAS
Outstanding Accounting Educator

The School's Elizabeth A. Murphy, Associate Professor of Accounting, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Accounting Educator of the Year by the Illinois CPA Society.

Prof. Murphy was cited for her distinguished and successful record of teaching excellence, her innovative advances and significant research in teaching and learning, and service to the profession and society.

The award--DePaul's seventh--is among the highest recognitions of educational excellence nationally.

With the 2005 award, Prof. Murphy joins in the recognition School Professor Edward Cohen (1989), Ernst & Young Professor Belverd E. Needles (1990), Professor Emeritus Robert M. Peters (1995), Professor John T. Ahern (1998), Deloitte Professor John E. McEnroe (2001), and our own Ledger & Quill Professor Mark L. Frigo (2002).

Yujong Hwang Joins School Faculty

Prof. Yujong Hwang, with the School last year as Visiting Professor, has been promoted, and will serve as Assistant Professor of MIS/e-business in the School of Accountancy and MIS.

Hwang earned his Ph.D. in MIS from the University of South Carolina; his teaching at DePaul includes MBA courses in Telecommunications Management, Database Management, and Systems Analysis and Design.

Hwang's current research focuses on e-commerce, knowledge management and human-computer interaction. His research has been published in such journals as The Journal of Management Information Systems, Communications of the ACM, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, The International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, and the Journal of End-User Computing.

Tax Executives Institute Presents
2005 Professor's Awards

The Chicago chapter of the Tax Executives Institute has awarded its 2005 Professor's Awards to School students and Strobel Scholars Andrea Bossong and Katherine Dahlberg.

The 2005 awards are the tenth and eleventh in the program, dating to 1999; to date the TEI chapter has generously provided over $16,000 in scholarships. Currently overseeing the Professor's Award program is TEI president John Mann (ServiceMaster).

The 2005 awards were to honor two distinguished tax practitioners, Judy Zelisko (VP-Tax, Brunswick Corporation) and John Mann (VP-Tax, ServiceMaster Company). Both are active TEI members, and have made major contributions to the organization: Zelisko is a chapter past president and TEI National president, 2004-05; in addition to serving as chapter president this year, Mann will serve as chapter National Representative through 2006.

Judges in this year's program were Profs. David Roberts and Mark Sullivan.

MAHA Reaches National Finals
in PWC x-Tax Competition

DePaul's chapter of the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants--MAHA--has once again taken national honors, this time reaching the "Final 5" in the PricewaterhouseCoopers xTax Case Competition.

Team MAHA--senior Michelle Del Real, junior Haider Zaidi, sophomores Michael Fernandez and Leticia Zavala, and freshman Adriana Zavala--will compete for the national xTax championship in Washington, DC, January 27-28, 2005.

Other universities in the top five include Brigham Young, Texas A&M, Texas-Austin and Wisconsin-Madison.

DePaul alums at Deloitte gathered for a festive start to the firm's 2004-05 Campaign for DePaul, hosted by two of DePaul's most Deep Blue alums, L&Q Past President Scott Steffens and School advisory committee member Stacy Janiak. The September 9 event attracted a good crowd of friends and alums to hear, among others, new DePaul University President Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M. , Athletic Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto, and Men's basketball coach Dave Leitao.

Ernst & Young--DePaul Kick Off Held

Two L&Q stalwarts at Ernst & Young-- Jim Logothetis and Executive Committee member Serena Legatos-- hosted this year's annual kick-off for the Ernst & Young Corporate Giving Campaign for DePaul, held at the E&Y Sears Tower offices on October 12.

The event brought together "The Finest" of both: E&Y's Legatos and Logothetis, alums Dennis Stoia, Mike Whelan, Luke Blaszczyk (a newer L&Q member from COM 04) and others.

Addressing the alums from the DePaul side were Commerce Dean Art Kraft, School Director Ray Whittington, and Ernst & Young Alumni Professor Belverd E. Needles, each of whom thanked E&Y and the alums for their support and continued confidence in the School and DePaul.

According to co-host Serena Legatos, new member Luke Blaszczyk set the tone for the evening with his words "DePaul was my first choice after high school and Ernst & Young was my first choice after DePaul. I am happy with both my decisions."

PricewaterhouseCoopers Challenged

A roomful of DePaul University alums at PricewaterhouseCoopers, ranging from the managing partner to student interns, got the PWC campaign started at the firm's One North Wacker Drive offices on November 17. The meeting was graced by three managing partners: current mp Jay Henderson, and past mp's Bill Bax and Ernie Wish.

Hosted by L&Q Executive Committee member Rob Jensen, the gathering focused on the long and happy relationship between PWC and DePaul, and the importance of alumni participation to assure high quality professional accounting education. Recent grad Lizett Coral spoke of the help she received from L&Q and PWC programs, and partner Jim Kuzanza emphasized the importance of alumni support.

The School's director Ray Whittington and Commerce Dean Art Kraft were also on hand to thank PWC for its strong participation with DePaul, and share news of recent accomplishments and successes.

Certainly the highlight of the evening was the brief address by DePaul Lifetime Trustee and L&Q Lifetime Associate Ernie Wish, aimed specially at the many recent graduates in the audience. Wish then concluded the evening with a surprise: a vigorous personal challenge matching grant for DePaul alums at PWC contributing to Ledger & Quill and DePaul.

Howard, Roberta Goss Named
L&Q Lifetime Associates

Long-time L&Q, School and DePaul supporters Howard and Roberta Goss were awarded Lifetime Associate status at the Ledger & Quill Fall Luncheon Wednesday, November 10.

Lifetime Associate status is conferred on members whose participation with L&Q has been significant, substantial, and over time, and whose nomination is approved by the Executive Committee and Board.

L&Q's commendation of the Gosses recognized their service to the school, the college, the university, their community and the greater Chicago area. The Goss Scholarship Fund in the School currently supports four students, and seven alumni graduated with Goss Scholarships.

Kidd, Ramanauskas Awards Presented

Also at the L&Q Fall Luncheon, two of the School's most prestigious awards for graduate education were presented: the James F. Kidd Award, and the Helene Ramanauskas-Marconi Prize, awarded to the top student in the Master of Science in Taxation and MBA-Management Accounting programs respectively.

Prof. Ed Foth, MST program director, presented the ninth annual Kidd Award to MST student Cassandra Miller, and Jim Sweeney, Clinical Professor in Kellstadt's Center for Strategy, Execution and Valuation, presented the tweflth annual Ramanuaskas Prize to Cecilia Brunetti.

Litman Takes Seiden Teaching Award

Joel Litman, member of the Ledger & Quill Board and Clinical Professor in Kellstadt's Center for Strategy, Execution and Valuation, has been selected to receive the Dan Seiden Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award for 2003-04.

Litman (Credit Suisse First Boston, New York) received the award at the Fall Commerce Faculty meeting in September.

Teaching primarily the GSB's 798 series of courses--Special Advanced Topics--Litman's coverage includes strategy and valuation frameworks, and strategic analysis, design and development. Along with Ledger & Quill Professor Mark L. Frigo, Litman is also involved in the executive education program of the Center for Corporate Financial Leadership of the Illinois CPA Society.

The 2004-05 "Success" awards total $14,500, bringing the School's total scholarship awards to close to $150,000.

The Success Through Scholarship Educational Fund at DePaul University was initiated by university trustees Ernst R. Wish and William B. Snow, and Ernst & Young Alumni Professor Belverd E. Needles. Originally a challenge grant offered by the three, the fund is now a joint endeavor of the university and Ledger & Quill, in association with the Illinois CPA Society and the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois.

The Success Through Scholarship Fund at DePaul is envisioned as a permanent, seven-figure educational resource.

BAP Awarded Distinguished Chapter Status at National Convention

The School's Beta Gamma chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the national honors fraternity for financial information professionals, was recognized as a Distinguished Chapter at the organization's annual meeting in Orlando this August.

Of over 250 chapters nationwide, only 39 were so recognized.

"This is certainly a well-deserved recognition for the chapter, which carefully planned and executed a productive and successful year," says School Director and BAP Faculty Advisor Ray Whittington.

Criteria for the select designation include participation at regional and national BAP events, chapter professional activities, and community service. And key is membership participation: 50% of a chapter's members must participate in the activities, and individually report. Given members' courses and curriculum, work and home responsibilities, and their being spread throughout Chicagoland, this is a remarkable testament to Beta Gamma's dedication and determination to excel.

For L&Q, 50% participation would be a Fall Luncheon of 1000.

Chapter officers throughout the award-winning period and responsible for the application process include Emily Cunningham, Shivani Sharma, Sarah Sanders, Ryan Fanning, Kim Trieu, Beata Parada, Jennifer Lindsay, Marta Malek, Andrea Bossong and Yuri Kaplanskiy.

2004-05 NABA Officers Announced

The School's student chapter of NABA--the National Association of Black Accountants--anounced its 2004-05 elected officers. Leading the chapter this year will be:

CFMA, TEI Awards Announced

The School is proud to announce recipients of the student awards offered through the Chicago chapters of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) and the Tax Executives Institute (TEI) :

The CFMA's Gordon Marshall scholarships were awarded to juniors Sarah Sanders and Lu Ling Li. Both Sarah and Lu Ling are double majors (Accounting and Finance), both are in the Strobel Scholars (honors) program, and both, as could be expected, have maintained nearly perfect grades through their junior years.

Further distinctions for each: Sarah was also selected to receive one of our L&Q Student Leadership Awards, and Lu Ling is actually a triple major, including Mathematics.

The School thanks the CFMA's Ron Marshall and chapter president Steve Lamp for their support of professional accounting education at DePaul, and encouraging our finest students.

And our good friends at the TEI also honored Sarah Sanders with its 2004 Professor's Award, the chapter's ninth award in its program since 1999. Over the years TEI members have provided $13,500 in support to outstanding students in the School of Accountancy.

This year's award is named to honor outgoing TEI chapter president Michael DeLuca, formerly Managing Director-Taxes, Household International, Inc.

The School is also pleased to acknowledge the efforts of John Mann and Paul Westman in establishing and overseeing the TEI Professor's Award program at DePaul.

Fred Lang 2004 Results

The School's twelfth annual Fred Lang Student Contest was held on May 25, and once again the judges faced a difficult decision, with four proficient and well-thought out presentations. All four student groups--the Accounting Club, Beta Alpha Psi, and our chapters of the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants--participated in the event.

In a close decision, MAHA took first place, the chapter's second consecutive first place finish.

Congratulations to Team MAHA: Michael Fernandez, Rafael Munoz, Carlos Navarro, Fabiola Salcedo, Leticia Zavala and coach Prof. Elizabeth Murphy.

L&Q Student Leadership Awards

This May, Ledger & Quill awarded its ninth round of Student Leadership Awards, selecting six students whose academic credentials and leadership in School, university, or community activities is exceptional.

Students receiving $1500 awards are Jonathan Assell, Katherine Dahlberg, Stacy Hendrickson, Michael Pizzella, Fabiola Salcedo and Sarah Sanders.

Since the program was first offered in Spring 1997, almost $55,000 in awards has been presented to 45 top students in the School of Accountancy.

MAHA Takes First . . . Again

DePaul's chapter of MAHA-The Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants-distinguished itself again with a first-place finish in the inaugural national case competition sponsored by the National Hispanic Business Association (NHBA), and held at its 2004 Leadership Conference in Washington, DC.

The "MAHA Consulting Team" team --Lizett Corral, Fabiola Salcedo, Rafael Munoz, Jessica Vazquez, and Michael Fernandez--developed a five-year marketing plan for a small business, including market profile and budget. Teams were evaluated on creativity, professionalism, organization and plan feasibility, as well as presentation materials and skills.

Other universities participating in the final competition were University of Illinois-Chicago, two teams from the University of Houston, and Cal State-Northridge.

The first-place finish at the 2004 NHBA competition is MAHA's third national recognition. Our students finished first in both the 2003 and 2002 case competitions sponsored by the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) and KPMG.

With Commerce Dean Art Kraft, School Director Ray Whittington, past L&Q president Scott Steffens, Blue Demon Coach Dave Leitao, L&Q Board member Ed Fellin and Executive Committee member Christine Fellin-Daum, DePaul Athletic Director Jean Lenti-Ponsetto, and many DePaul alums at D&T, October 14 was almost "DePaul Night" at Deloitte & Touche.

School Director Ray Whittington, newly-appointed D&T Professor John McEnroe, Dean Art Kraft and D&T partner Scott Steffens.

Hosted by Steffens, the event started the firm's annual DePaul campaign, even as the Cubs were set to take the field in the historic (if unfortunate) Game 6 of the playoffs. Not only is Deloitte & Touche support of DePaul strong, but, as School Director Ray Whittington emphasized, the scope of that support is especially broad, benefiting many aspects of the School. Not a few alumni attending were participants in the D&T Minority Scholarship program.

Whittington also announced at the reception the appointment of John E. McEnroe, formerly our Ledger & Quill Alumni Distinguished Research Professor, as Deloitte & Touche Distinguished Professor. McEnroe, a nationally prominent name in accounting research focusing on standards, standards setting and its process, thanked the alumni for their support

CFMA Marshall Awards Named

DePaul Strobel Scholars Ahmed Abdul-Jaleel and Matt Benefield have been awarded the 2003 Gordon Marshall Awards, sponsored by the Chicago chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association.

The awards are for not only superior academic performance, but also significant university or community service. Both students are active in School student groups and religious/community service programs--while maintaining their grades in the rigorous honors accounting program.

The awards are named in recognition of the distinguished career and contributions of past CFMA officer Gordon Marshall, and were presented to DePaul by past chapter president Ron Marshall and current president Steven Lamp.

Established in 1981, the CFMA, with 6000 members in 80 chapters nationally, is the premier organization serving the communication and educational needs of financial professionals in the construction industry.

MAHA Takes National
Case Competition Again

DePaul's chapter of MAHA--The Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants--was awarded first place in the 2003 Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) national Student Case Competition, October 6, in Albuquerque, NM, sponsored by KPMG.

This is the second consecutive national victory for the DePaul MAHA Case Team, after a second place finish in 2000.

The MAHA team included (above, left to right), Jorge Blakely, Leslie Sanabria, Lizette Corral, Fabiola Salcedo and Rafael Munoz. Corral and Salcedo were also on the 2002 team that also took first place in the competition.

Instrumental in the DePaul win were those coaching and supporting: MAHA faculty advisor Prof. Beth Murphy, past MAHA president and 2002 team member Sam Delgado (Abbott Laboratories), and from KPMG Chris Kachinsky, Sandra Castellanos, Amy Markwell, and L&Q Executive Committee member Ed Wiertel.

Strobel Soccer Scholars Recognized

Two students in our Strobel Scholars program have been recognized on the Conference USA Commisioner's Academic Honor Roll for outstanding achievement in the classroom and on the field.

Hannel Beard

Senior Courtney Hannel and Sophomore Robert Beard were recognized for their superior academic performance while putting in long hours in practice and competition. Both also were awarded Blue Ribbons by the DePaul Athletic Academic Advising Program, for maintaining perfect 4.00 term GPA's.

Hannel also serves as Secretary of the Accounting Club, and has held internships with Deloitte & Touche and Yetter Consulting. Beard, who was recruited by both DePaul's Athletics Department and the School of Accountancy, holds one of our L&Q scholarships.

New Scholarship Awards

The School is pleased to announce yet two more prestigious scholarships having been awarded to DePaul students: an American Institute of CPAs award to Fabiola Salcedo, and the Deloitte & Touche Minority Scholarship/Internship award to Carmen Boyd.

Fabiola is a junior in the Strobel Scholars program and serves as Vice-president of the School's MAHA chapter. She was also selected to participate in the highly selective Financial Professional Development internship program of Abbott Laboratories. Carmen, also a Strobel Scholars junior, will be the eighth student in the D&T program, now in its sixth year at the School. Carmen's internships have included Merrill Lynch and Tribune Broadcasting.
