Quickly now--an L&Q FAQ:
(Or just download our membership brochure.) Who or what is Ledger & Quill? Ledger & Quill, or "L&Q," is the friends and alumni support organization of the DePaul University School of Accountancy and Management Information Systems. It was established in 1972, and is in its fourth decade of service to DePaul, the School, and the accounting profession. We are DePaul's oldest alumni group, one of the largest accounting networks in the area, and may very well be unique in the nation. What does it do? Ledger & Quill works to enhance the prestige and value of a DePaul accounting degree, chiefly through helping to attract, educate, and graduate the best accounting students. One of its oldest goals is to maintain School pre-eminence in professional accounting education. We also provide activities for members and friends--social events, receptions, CPE sessions, and especially tremendous and regular networking opportunities. How does it do this? Through its extensive array of student, faculty and School support--an array possibly unmatched nationally: distinguished professorships, generous scholarships and awards, student and student group support, and more.

Sounds pretty expensive . . . Indeed. L&Q's 2007-08 scholarship and award programs alone, including all awards "under the L&Q umbrella," total over $233,000. Add the professorships, and faculty, student group and School support, and L&Q's contributions to DePaul are significant.
But where does all that money come from? Members. L&Q receives no funds from the university. Members' annual contributions is our only source of revenue. Alumni, friends, firms, corporations, foundations, benefactors. Close to 2000 individual members, supported and matched by many firms and foundations, pay the bills.
Why do they do this ? Again, to maintain DePaul's recognized excellence in accounting education, and to continue DePaul's being considered an "educator of choice" for major firms and industries. In a sense, L&Q members provide the resources that drive this dynamic, which results in outstanding graduates. The value of your accounting degreeis enhanced, too. And, of course, with outstanding graduates, the profession itself is strengthened. Who are L&Q's members? Well, for members who are at the moment DePaul's Finest, see who makes up the
L&Q Executive Committee and the L&Q Board. L&Q members are those who have contributed to the School of Accountancy or Ledger & Quill, or restricted their annual gift to DePaul to the School or L&Q. It is, in brief, and alumni association--but of the Accounting branch of the DePaul family L&Q members are undergraduate alums, alums of our many graduate programs, and our Accounting Studies Program as well. Generally, anyone who has benefited from DePaul's accounting programs can become a member. Further, L&Q is always flattered by the fact that some members are not DePaul alums--they just admire what we do, and want to be part of us. So if my undergraduate degree is not from DePaul, but I earned my MST degree there, I can join?
Of course! And again, we're always flattered how many graduate school alums we have as members, especially in the MST program. How does membership in L&Q relate to membershipin other DePaul alumni organizations? In a word, synergistically. Membership in Ledger & Quill entails automatic membership in the DePaul University alumni community, by virtue of your supporting DePaul through L&Q. But it does NOT work the other way: contributing to DePaul generally will not get you on the L&Q membership roster unless you restrict or specify your gift to the School of Accountancy or Ledger & Quill.
That's why you see and hear so often
(And while we're here, many L&Q members and Accounting alums participate in the ASK program--Alumni Sharing Knowledge, through which you can share--in your own way, however you want, when and where you want-- your experiences and insights with a DePaul accounting student.
