Vincentian Mission Fellows Program

Mentor Job Description

Vincentian Mission Fellows Program Description:

The Vincentian Mission Fellows Program provides the skills, formation, and understanding for a select group of students who have reached the highest level of Vincentian mission engagement to firmly root their career and lifestyle aspirations in Vincentian values and service.

The program will include a variety of academic, service, reflection, and co-curricular activities. Each fellow will receive scholarship support and be assigned a mentor who is presently leading a professional and personal life characterized by a dedication to Vincentian values.

It is hoped that as Vincentian Mission Fellows graduate they will, as alumni, become the program’s future mentors and by participating in this program the Vincentian Mission Fellows will make clear connections and commitment to continue to foster the Vincentian vision, mission and values into their future career and lifestyle.

Mentor Expectations:

a. Assisting in clarifying career aspirations and related goals of the VM Fellow
b. Sharing with the VM Fellow your own career preparation and journey
c. Helping to identify appropriate out-of-classroom learning experiences, including but not limited to internships and part-time employment
d. Attending at least two VMF Mentor gatherings each year of the two-year program.
e. Mentoring VM Fellow through VMF program assignments
f. Helping the VM Fellow seek innovative and alternative learning options
g. Fostering a relationship that challenges the VM Fellow to seek deeper meaning in living out the Vincentian mission within their career and lifestyle aspirations.

The Mentor’s relationship with the VM Fellow is paramount. The more the VM Fellow is exposed to the reality, both the highs and lows, of living out one’s professional life rooted in Vincentian values, the better chance he/she will have in attempting to do the same.

The Mentor-VM Fellow relationship includes listening, advising, challenging and counseling. The Mentor helps clarify the VM Fellow’s focus and direction (goals) and suggest ways of reaching those goals.

This relationship may be both formal and informal. Obviously there needs to be contact, but that contact can occur in various ways: email, one on one meetings, or the telephone. One-on-one meetings are expected, but the frequency depends upon how the VM Fellow and you work through the expectations listed above.

Overall, the Mentor helps explore unique and creative ways that the VM Fellow can use to reach his/her professional and personal goals while staying rooted in Vincentian values.
