Volunteer Opportunities

THE LEDGER & QUILL BOARD IS EXPANDING! If you are interested in being considered for Board membership, please let us know. While Ledger & Quill committees are usually staffed by members of the Executive Committee and the current L&Q Board, interested alumni may volunteer for service. Committees in operation for 2009-10 include:

Board Augmentation Committee

The Board of Ledger & Quill oversees the organization's activities, programs, operations and finances, all of which are administered directly by the Executive Committee. The Board also serves to assure and reinforce the congruence of L&Q activities with DePaul's Vincentian heritage and mission. The Board is composed of representatives from area firms and businesses, and meets twice annually; Board members are traditionally considered a DePaul "champion" at their respective firms, participate in L&Q programs and activities, and serve as the School of Accountancy liaison to that firm.

The Board Augmentation Committee seeks  (1) to increase the size and scope of the current Board;  (2) to identify and secure new members; (3) to  increase the number and range of firms represented on the Board; (4) to increase the diversity of the Board, and (5) to explore new avenues to Board membership to supplement the curent mainly firm-based representation. Additionally, the Board Augmentation Committee will suggest a mechanism for more formalized member rotations and replacements.

Young Alumni Committee

As all organizations, Ledger & Quill is determined to increase its ranks--and potency--with newer DePaul accounting alumni; starting the habit of philanthropy early is key, and L&Q will make aggressive efforts to attract our newer alumni to our organization through  initiatives aimed at younger alumni. These initiatives seek  (1) to increase and improve L&Q awareness and visibility among young alumni; (2) to attract newer alumni (loosely defined) to L&Q membership by offering social events and activities to get them interested and then involved; (3) to assist in promoting L&Q membership to senior accounting students, so they understand the benefits of L&Q for them and their careers, especially in the Chicago-area accounting community. The Young Alumni Initatives will be conducted with the assistance and cooperation of the University's Alumni Relations and Advancement offices.

Membership Outreach Committee

Growth in Ledger & Quill, which was established in 1972 with 19 members, is imperative if it is to continue what has emerged as an annual "tuition bill" of over $250,000: the annual amount of scholarships and awards Ledger & Quill provides well over 100 accounting students--an accomplishment unparalleled nationwide. This committee is at work on (1) reviewing current L&Q marketing and communications and recommending changes, improvements and updates; (2) to consider other and new channels we should be using, especially the various social media younger alumni embrace; (3) consider a new overall marketing strategy, if necessary, and (4) benchmark L&Q outreach efforts to those of peer institutions.

Funds Allocation/Oversight Committee

As a major scholarship provider, good stewardship is essential to L&Q. The goal of the Funds Allocation/Oversight Committee is to determine the most effective use of L&Q funds within the contexts of DePaul's Vincentian philosophy, heritage and mission, the university's Vision 2012 long-range plan, and the current economics of private higher education. The committee will review current scholarship and award programs, procedures and selection criteria, and make recommendations.
